There are many factors to consider when valuating a piece, but primarily buyers will consider the intrinsic value and resale value to provide a cash estimate before you sell your items.
Intrinsic value – The “intrinsic” value is the metal value plus the gem value of a piece. Precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, etc.) and gems (diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, etc.) are priced differently, so it is important to find a potential buyer that knows how to calculate precious metal prices as well as gem prices. At Precious Elements, not only are we experts in precious metal valuations but we also know how to grade, assess, and appraise precious gems, so you'll always get an accurate appraisal when you sell to us.
Resale value – Some pieces, though not all, may have a resale value that is higher than its intrinsic value. In this case, the resale value is determined by the intrinsic value plus additional factors such as workmanship, design, artist, etc. Because there are many other factors that can influence the resale value, it is important to work with a buyer that knows what to look for so you can be sure that you are getting top-dollar for your item(s).
The experts at Precious Elements often consider many more factors than any other company, allowing us to provide a fair market dollar value for your piece; so you can be sure that you are getting every penny that your item is worth.
Beyond the intrinsic value of your piece (the precious metal spot price plus the gem price), the next most important consideration is whether the item is from a luxury or designer brand. Luxury and designer jewelry naturally receive higher valuations, but don't worry if you're not sure what brand your piece is, our expert appraisers will help you find out so you get a fair price!
Tiffany & Co. – Every piece from Tiffany & Co. is stamped with the “Tiffany & Co.” mark, and some may contain a trademark date as well. Among Tiffany toggle bracelets and necklaces, authentic pieces have soldered links, whereas a knockoff’s chain links are usually pinched together.
Cartier – Although exact stamping for authentic Cartier jewelry can vary, the logo is always printed in their signature script and modern pieces will be stamped with the metal type and a unique serial number. Cartier bracelets and rings will also be stamped with their respective size.
Van Cleef & Arpels – Authentic Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry is always stamped as either “Van Cleef & Arpels” or “VCA” (fakes are commonly only stamped with “Van Cleef”) as well as a unique serial number and the piece’s metal type.
David Yurman – Authentic David Yurman jewelry features two embossed stamps: metal content and trademark. Some older pieces of Yurman may contain peculiar stampings called “craftsman” or “factory” stamps.
Bulgari – Genuine Bulgari jewelry is stamped with an authentic Bulgari hallmark, the brand’s name, the piece’s metal type and the words “Made in Italy.” Another important hallmark of an authentic Bulgari piece is that the “U” is replaced with a “V” and is written as “BVLGARI.”
Roberto Coin – The Roberto Coin registered maker’s mark is “1226VI” and is always stamped into genuine Roberto Coin jewelry. Another unique feature of a Roberto Coin piece is a small ruby set on the inside or underside of the piece (this signature “hidden ruby” was introduced in 1996).
Chanel – Authentic Chanel jewelry, inspired and created by Gabrielle Chanel, feature a stamp of the brand name "Chanel", "Chanel CC Made in France", serial number, karat of metal, and/or a Chanel signature.
Chopard – Authentic Chopard jewelry features a brand name signature "Chopard", the metal content, and a serial number. Gold pieces are marked with a "750" while platinum pieces are marked with a "950".
Buccellati – Stamping for Buccellati jewelry can vary depending on the age. Modern pieces will feature the brand name "Buccellati" as well as a serial number.
The above list is just a small sampling of the luxury and designer brands we buy. If you want to learn how much your luxury piece is worth, contact the experts at Precious Elements for an honest, transparent, and risk-free cash estimate.
Old jewelry can be just as valuable as new, or in some cases even more valuable depending on when a piece was made or who made it. In the trade, the terms “vintage” and “antique” or often used interchangeably to describe old pieces. However, there are subtle differences that will help you determine whether the piece you are selling is in fact vintage or antique.
A piece is considered “vintage” if it is between 50 and 100 years old, and “antique” if it is more than 100 years old. Antique pieces are also often more precious, delicate, and rare (and therefore usually more valuable) than vintage pieces, but there are exceptions. If you are unsure of how old your piece is, contact the expert buyers at Precious Elements for a free valuation.
